CNAM Lookup

If you have CNAM lookup enabled for a US phone number, you’ll be charged every time you receive an inbound call on that number, irrespective of the lookup result. See our Voice Pricing page for CNAM lookup pricing, or the console Voice Pricing page.

You can enable and disable CNAM lookup on US phone numbers rented from Plivo on the console or via API.

Account-level default configuration

On the console, go to Phone Numbers > Settings to choose whether CNAM lookup is enabled by default. This setting controls whether lookup is enabled for newly rented numbers.

Configuring CNAM lookup on the console

When renting US numbers, you can enable or disable CNAM lookup. Visit Phone Numbers > Buy Numbers to rent new phone numbers and select the configuration you want. If you choose to skip configuration, the default CNAM lookup config will apply to the number.

You can update the CNAM lookup setting on your US phone numbers by ticking the selection box in the right-hand column of the Active Numbers page, then clicking the Choose Action drop-down and selecting Update CNAM Lookup.

Configuring CNAM lookup via API

You can check whether CNAM lookup is configured for your US phone numbers on the console or via the API.

Go to Phone Numbers > Active to see the CNAM lookup status on your US numbers.

Use the cnam_lookup parameter of the AccountPhoneNumber object to check via API whether CNAM lookup is enabled.

You can filter numbers by using the cnam_lookup parameter in the List Account Phone Number API.

CNAM, or caller ID name, is a feature in the US public telephone network that associates business and personal phone numbers with names. The carrier from whom a number has been subscribed adds the CNAM information to CNAM repositories that are collectively referred to as the line information database (LIDB). When someone receives a call, their carrier queries the LIDB and displays the assigned caller name.
