Upcoming commercial long code SMS product and fee structure changes on Verizon

What's happening?


Plivo will be moving all existing and new long code SMS numbers to Verizon’s new 10-digit long code (10DLC) A2P service. Unlike today's long code product, this new service is designed specifically for commercial long code messaging. We believe this service will offer our customers the best possible stability and deliverability for your business needs. 

To use this new commercial long code service, Verizon is charging a termination fee of $0.0025 per mobile terminated in the SMS message segment. All commercial long code Verizon traffic, regardless of provider, is being directed to this product and will be subject to this fee. We will pass this fee through to our customers at no markup. 

What is Verizon A2P 10DLC?

This refers to Verizon's new "10-digit long code (10DLC)" service. This is an industry-first solution to explicitly allow Application-to-Peer (A2P) SMS traffic over long code phone numbers in the US.

Do I have to use Verizon 10DLC?

Yes. All long code messaging to Verizon is required to utilize this new service.

What exactly will change when this service goes live? Does 10DLC still have carrier filtering?

You should expect to see the improved delivery quality of SMS messages to the Verizon mobile network. The new Verizon 10DLC service does have filtering, but it is designed to target spam and abusive traffic and is not geared toward blocking all forms of A2P messaging as is the case with the filters currently in place with many US and Canada mobile carriers.

What is the cost of this new service?

Verizon is adding a termination surcharge of $0.0025 per SMS message segment sent from a Plivo long code number to Verizon. We will pass this fee through to our customers at no markup.

Are providers other than Plivo subject to this fee?

All providers – not just Plivo – are impacted by Verizon’s change fee. Plivo has made the decision to pass along the fee without any markup.

Do I need to do anything, like changing my Plivo numbers or account configuration?

No, you do not need to make any changes to your Plivo account or phone numbers. After the service goes live, all your long code traffic to Verizon Wireless will automatically begin sending via the new 10DLC service.

Will this change my Plivo phone numbers?

No, this new service does not cause any changes to your Plivo phone numbers. This change only affects the cost and delivery quality for long code SMS messages to the Verizon network.

The term "10-digit long code" (10DLC) refers to standard US/Canadian local phone numbers, such as those Plivo offers, which are ten digits long including the area code.

If I use shortcodes today, should I move to long codes now?

Plivo recommends that if you currently use shortcodes, you continue to do so. Shortcodes continue to offer best in class deliverability, reliability, and throughput across all major mobile networks, not just Verizon.

What about other mobile networks (AT&T, T-Mobile, etc.)?

This new service is only for SMS messages to Verizon. Plivo expects that the other major US and Canada mobile carriers will eventually follow with their own solutions for allowing A2P traffic over long codes. However, there are no market-wide updates available at this time. As always, we will keep our customers updated with information about such changes whenever we have news to share.
